Artist Claire Burke
Claire Burke grew up in rural Cornwall where she remains an elected member of the
Newlyn Society of Artists. After studying at Falmouth College of Art she completed
her BA (Hons) in fine painting at Central Saint Martins later exhibiting alongside
Sir Terry Frost and Sandra Blow.
Her work using traditional gilding techniques has a meditative quality playing on the
light and space of her childhood home. Utilising materials such as gold size, silver leaf,
bole and dragons blood the work is made up of many layers which when dry are then
‘distressed’ with a cracking product. As the artist has no control over the final
process the effect is both organic and unique.
These shimmering abstract panels exude a luminous aura that bathes the viewer in a
contemplative mood and are critically acclaimed both here and abroad.
Much of Claire’s work has been immediately commissioned for private and corporate
collections since leaving college.
This popularity for using these materials in a different format proves that on
international level precious metals will continue to be a language that needs no
translation and is why Claire is proud to be part of London Jewellery Week 2010.
Claire is represented by The Cynthia Corbett Gallery, London.
